Hi friend👋
I want to talk about something a little different today — something really personal.
A few years ago, I was diagnosed with haemochromatosis, also known as iron overload. It’s a genetic condition where your body stores too much iron — and over time, that excess iron builds up in your organs and can cause serious damage.
Here’s the thing:
I wasn’t alone. My dad has it. So does my sister. And both of my brothers.
But despite all that, I still went undiagnosed until my late 20s.
The wild part?
Ireland has the highest rates of haemochromatosis in the world — yet over 20,000 people are walking around undiagnosed.
It’s often misunderstood as something that only affects men. But that’s not true — women may just present later due to monthly blood loss from menstruation. Left untreated, it can lead to complications like liver damage, diabetes, and heat complications.
💡 The good news?
It’s very treatable if caught early.
The treatment is simple: regular blood removal (kind of like donating blood) to bring iron levels down and prevent damage.
This week is World Haemochromatosis Awareness Week (June 1–7), and I just want to use my little corner of the internet to shine a light on it.
If you’ve been feeling unusually tired, dealing with sore joints, mood swings, or just haven’t felt like yourself — maybe this is your sign to ask your GP for a simple iron panel blood test.
I also have a YouTube video all about my story and the role of diet in managing haemochromatosis if you’d like to learn more.
Sending this with care and hoping it helps even one person catch it early - as it just may save your life❤️
The Irish Haemochromatosis Website is a fantastic resource for anyone who wants to learn more about the condition and is looking for support.
